Light pollution is an rife in Singapore. In 2016, we topped the world for the Most Light Polluted Country, with a 100% pollution level. Pollution levels exceed 3000 micro-candela per meter squared, but not much is known about light pollution, especially in Singapore.

THE SITUATION

THE SITUATION

Singapore has one of the highest levels of light pollution globally. In fact, light pollution is so prevalent that a third of the world cannot see the Milky Way in their skies. Yet, the issue of excessive artificial light lacks sufficient awareness.

Light pollution has a boundless spectrum of detriments. The most striking concern with excess illumination and constant exposure to different wavelengths and intensities of light are the adverse health effects, such as a risk factor for cancer and their effect on melatonin levels.

With Light It Down, we hope to raise awareness about the problems Light Pollution brings, as well as educate the public about astronomy and biodiversity found in Singapore.
